The wildebeest migration is one of Africa’s greatest wildlife spectacles. At least two million ungulates – mainly wildebeest, but also zebra and gazelles – move throughout the Mara-Serengeti eco-system. The crossing of the Mara River is the absolute highlight of the migration.
The question of when to catch the great wildebeest migration live has been the center of all travelers school of major concerned. There is very little predictability about this and questions as to which is the best month to witness migration; this question is most likely to get different answers from different people / authors.
Generally, the best wildlife viewing months in Tanzania are during the dry season from late June to October. The best chance of seeing the wildebeest migration in the Serengeti is during June and July and the time to see the wildebeest calving is late January to the first 3 weeks of the month of February. The southern and western circuit parks are best visited during the dry-season (June to October), unlike the more popular northern circuit parks that can be visited year-round. Tarangire is the only exception, since its wildlife viewing is considerably better in the dry-season as well.

Upon arrival at Kenya’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, you will be met and received by one of our safari airport representative and the guide, Followed by a short briefing and then head to Masai mara National game reserve driving on the floor of the great rift valley with a stop at the view point.
The reserve’s vast plains are dotted with clustered knots of trees giving rise to the Masai name ‘Maa’, community which means ‘spotted’. Affectionately known as the Mara, this reserve protects the northern-most section of the Mara-Serengeti ecosystem, a magnificent 25 000 square kilometres of natural migration corridor. Accommodation at Mara Serova Luxury tented safari camp.
Maasai Mara. Sarova Mara Game Camp offers front seats to nature’s most breathtaking show – the wildebeest migration. The endless plains of East Africa are the setting for the world’s greatest wildlife spectacle where, from the vast Serengeti plains to the champagne colored hills of Kenya’s Maasai Mara, over 1.4 million wildebeest and 200,000 zebra and gazelle, relentlessly tracked by Africa’s great predators, migrate in a clockwise fashion over 1,800 miles each year in search of rain ripened grass. The lodge is well positioned to enjoy this unique phenomenon. The rolling plains around the Camp are teeming with wildebeest, gazelles and zebras during the migration months, and the Camp is situated right in the center of their migration path.
Day 2 & 3 : Full day Exploring Masai Mara National Park Trailing the Wildebeest.
A wildlife safari puts you right in the middle of all this action. Get a first-hand account of this epic phenomenon and live to tell the tale. A safari also helps you acquaint yourself with the landscapes of this beautiful African setting, An ideal choice for those seeking a richer experience of the Maasai Mara that goes much beyond just game drives. By virtue of its location and layout, the Camp offers an unparalleled plethora of activities and experiences from luxury tented living to bird-watching, mini golf, sport fishing and a unique insight into the Maasai culture at the adjoining Maasai village.
The Mara has a richly varied resident population of wildlife, including all the Big 5 along with rarer species like cheetah, bat-eared foxes and Roan antelope. The Great Migration occurs when the vast herds of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle move through the ecosystem following the rains and fresh grazing.
More than 470 bird species have been recorded here, including 60 raptors. Among the resident species that top the must-see list are vultures, marabou storks, secretary birds and African pygmy falcons. The national bird of Kenya is the aptly named lilac-breasted roller, a whimsical beauty that flashes its jewel colors against the muted tones of the savannah.
We leave the camp soon after breakfast and proceed to Tanzania via Isebania Border – proceed to Speke bay lodge where you spend the afternoon fishing or taking a boat ride at an extra cost. Speke Bay Lodge is located on the south-eastern shore of Lake Victoria in Tanzania, East Africa. It is 15 kilometers from the Serengeti National Park. Speke Bay is part of Speke Gulf, named after the famous explorer John Hanning Speke, who, in 1858, discovered Lake Victoria to be the source of the Nile.
Embraced by savannah, the Lodge looks like a small village, stretched out along the shores of the lake quite scenic and refreshing experience worth the visit.
Day 4 : Speke Bay – Serengeti National Park
After Morning Breakfast, depart Speke bay Enter Serengeti via Ndabaka gate for a full day game drives, we drive south and west to the western corridor of the great Serengeti via Ndabaka Gate with a picnic lunch .Dinner and overnight stay at Kati Kati Luxury safari camp.
Day 5: Serengeti National park
Serengeti, Masai call Siringitu: place where the land moves on forever. Tanzania’s first game reserve, the Serengeti National Park is one of the last remaining natural migration corridors and one of the oldest ecosystems on earth. Its climate, vegetation and fauna have remained mostly unchanged over the past million years. The natural instinct that drives the annual Great Migration of more than a million wildebeest, gazelle and zebra is so powerful that neither drought nor crocodile-infested rivers can halt it.The Serengeti National Park is arguably the most impressive wildlife sanctuary in the world. During the months December through March the seemingly unending plains of the southern Serengeti and the Conservation Area are inhabited by enormous herds of wildebeest and zebra. The great herds graze on rain ripened grass. In the calving season (late January through mid March) the herds concentrate at the Ndutu and Salei plains (Southern Serengeti / Ngorongoro Conservation Area) attracting the attention of predators like lion, cheetah and hyena.
Day 6 : Serengeti –Ngorongoro conservation area via Olduvai gorge
We view game as we drive southeast up into the magnificent Ngorongoro Conservation Area .Stop over at The Olduvai Gorge with picnic lunch en route Over at the Olduvai where we spend the night at the Rhino Lodge at the crater rim.
The Olduvai Gorge cuts through rock beds layered in time sequence from 2 million years ago to the present and it is here where humanoid bones have been found dating back to over 1.75 million years including a direct ancestor of modern man. Fossil foot prints (over three million years old) have also been found here and are the most ancient footprints yet discovered. There is an excellent site museum where you can explore the diggings with a guide and it is also a great place to view birds such as the purple grenadier, red and yellow barbet, speckle fronted weaver and slaty colored bouboub.
Day 7 : Ngorongoro- crate tour
Breakfast al leisure then descend into the crater for a full day crater tour with packed lunches . Ascend the crater rim for dinner and overnight stay Rhino Lodge

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) is home of Ngorongoro Crater. It was formed some 2.5 million years ago from a volcanic mountain sinking due to inactivity, and was initially thought to be higher than Tanzania’s famous Kilimanjaro. The crater has evolved into a unique and integral part of Tanzania’s eco-system. The crater is actually a caldera, measures 22.5 km’s across and the rim walls stand 600m high. Views from within and from the rim are breathtaking (as can be seen from the picture). The crater houses 30,000 animals and a large variety of birds, which rarely move from the area due to the availability of water through wet and dry seasons
DAY 8: Ngorongoro Crater – Fascinating Lake Manyara
After breakfast, depart for Lake Manyara National park. Manyara’s lush forests are alive with skipping blue monkeys and the joyous honking of hornbills. Where the forest gives way to plains, the eye is drawn past clouds of flamingo on the lakeshore, up to a line of pale purple volcanic. Inland from the floodplains lies a narrow belt of acacia woodland, home to tree-climbing lions, Africa’s graceful giants, elephants, and the diminutive Kirk’s dik-dik. Clans of banded mongoose add a comical touch to the panorama.
Manyara is a birder’s delight thanks to the combination of wetlands, woodlands and hot springs. Birds flourish here with over 400 recorded species in the area. While flamingos put on the most ostentatious show, Manyara is a haven for many large, migratory water birds, including pelicans and storks.
The Lodge offers daily game viewing expeditions on foot, safari vehicle or mountain bikes, all led by expert guides, as well as night drives that offer fascinating insights into the rich nocturnal life of the Park, and the chance to spot elusive creatures like aardvark and bat-eared foxes.
